Belly Fat Loss Basics
How do we in fact lose belly flab? And when we talk about burning fat, what do we actually mean?
Here’s a very straightforward, and simple to understand explanation of what really happens in creating a fat loss effect.
The fundamental view that diet gurus and fitness trainers have led us to believe for years is that it’s all about our intake of calories versus the calories we burn.
This is true for losing weight – but it’s not the complete truth for belly flab loss or fatloss in general, there are a quantity of defensive mechanisms that our bodies have in place, called ‘rate limiting steps’ to prevent fat being lost.
On a very primitive level – Fat burning is in essence a two step procedure.
The primary step is mobilization. We need to make the fat leave the fat cells so we can then use the fat as a fuel source.
Fat mobilization is governed essentially by levels of a hormone known as HSL short for Hormone Sensitive Lipase. On general terms, the higher the level of HSL we have then we can mobilize more fat from the fat cells.
So how do we get higher HSL? We need to boost adrenaline or primarily our catecholamine levels
How do we do that? Simple we exercise. In particular high intensity exercise.
But HSL is also restricted by insulin. Therefore high insulin levels mean low HSL levels and hence we don’t mobilize enough fat.
Therefore a great strategy for part one is low insulin levels which we achieve by the correct diet and easy training plus high catecholamines which we achieve by high intensity exercise
The second part of the procedure is transport and oxidation.
If HSL levels are high-level – fat cells break down into FFA (free fatty acids) which circulate in the blood and eventually finish up in a muscle where they can be burned off in the mitochondria.
But there’s another rate limiting step here. Transporting the FFA into the mitochondria where it can be burned off. That transport is controlled by carnitine levels.
If carnitine levels are high – fat transport is high.
A good analogy here would be to compare carnitine to a farm gate.
If you had 100 sheep to herd into a field and there is only one gate, it would take a long time to get all the sheep into the field.
But on the other hand if you had 20 gates, then the sheep would get into the field a lot quicker. So the more gates you have (carnitine) the faster the process.
So I hear you ask “how do we ramp up carnitine levels?” Once again we have a rate limiting step. If muscle glycogen is high then carnitine levels are low.
Therefore we need to reduce muscle glycogen and we achieve that with metabolic work and we have the optimal fat oxidation state.
So high intensity glycogen depleting exercise is chosen.
Putting all the above together, we now have large levels of fat mobilization plus high levels of fat oxidation, which will leave us with our desired accelerated fat loss and a vanishing beer belly..

So if you work out how to combine all those steps, and get around each rate limiting hurdle – you’ll find that fat loss is really very simple..

It always annoyed me when I’m told – a good belly fat loss diet could achieve 2lbs of fat loss each week.
“Any more than that and you’ll start to shed muscle fibre”.

We’ve all been taught that two pounds a week is the target to lose love handles… Yet there are genuine controlled studies displaying belly fat loss much higher than that.
So is fast weight loss about burning calories? Well the simple answer is No….
There are studies displaying that interval training, whilst burning less calories during the workout, results in a significantly greater overall fat loss than a more energetic workout of calorie burning training…
Also there are studies showing the same total calories burned from weight training and cardio, results in drastically different amounts of fat loss.
So it’s not just about calories…
There are nutrition studies that illustrate altering the source of protein intake doubled the lean mass gains and increased fat shed – without changing total calorie intake or even activity levels.
Another study showed a similar occurrence when you changed the source of dietary fat or carbs. Once more – no change in total calories in, or activity levels (calories out) — but there was a pronounced reduction in body fat.
So after reading differing types of fat loss information, it’s not difficult to arrive at the conclusion:
You shouldn’t believe that it’s only possible to lose 2lbs a week, in fact…
If we concentrate on doing everything the correct way- looking for synergy between the different components for burning our belly fat as opposed to incompatibility and cancelling each other out. – we can ramp all the processes up, and work them all together so that instead of training and dieting for 12 weeks — you’d get great results in less than a month.

The easiest abdominal exercises for losing belly fat are without a doubt activities that you enjoy the most. If you enjoy what you’re doing, you will be more able to persevere with them and watch your belly fat disappear.
A common myth that many people believe is that starting a belly fat busting exercise routine will mean doing loads of repetitive crunches and sit-ups. When your body has got used to your brisk walking, start introducing running into your walks.
Start off with a couple of minutes of jogging, then back to 5 minutes of walking, 5 minutes of jogging etc. Let your body recover from the jogging whilst still maintaining a brisk walk.
You’ll be surprised how quickly you’ll adapt and when you think your body feels capable, start adding a couple of minutes sprint running in between the jogging and walking. Bump up the intensity of sprinting and before you realise it you’ll be jogging and sprinting without having to walk in between. whenever you can, if you can climb 10 flights of stairs instead of taking the elevator, you’ll soon see the benefits, which include: weight loss, stress relief, increased energy levels and muscle tone, and of course it will improve your inner body as well. (heart, lungs, and circulation).

Along with a few friends get out to your favourite club and dance the night away. This is a brilliant way to get the heart pumping and lose those stubborn pounds and what could be more enjoyable?
If you’ve got a Nintendo Wii, invest in the Wii fit, and enjoy the exercises with the rest of your family and friends, I recommend the boxing as you’ll be amazed how much of a sweat you’ll build up.
Biking for Weight Loss : Check out your local library to see if there are any local cycling clubs in your area to join. Or take your bicycle along with your family for a leisurely ride into the country. Treat your cycling like my tips on walking, build up your speed and gradually introduce sprints into your routine.
Another fun way to “ride a bike” is to sign up for a spinning class at your local fitness center. It offers an intense work out gives big cardio exercise to help burn the belly flab and lots of sweat!
Racquet Sports: This is a big one, you can burn approximately 300 calories playing squash or tennis. Go for it, grab a racquet and hit the courts.

Belly Flab Is Dangerous To Your Health!!
Quite a statement, like me, you probably thought the flab around your belly was more of a hindrance or embarrassment, the belly you have to try so hard to suck in when you’re chatting up a foxy lady or walking along the beach…
Well sorry to tell you, but the belly flab you’re carrying around should have a health warning stuck on it. You see it’s mainly made up of visceral or ‘toxic fat’ which is found deep in your belly.
This fat is right amongst the vessels that circulate blood to some of your vital organs, and it loves to attach itself to these arteries and cause problems with your bodies functions. For instance it can affect your livers ability to control cholesterol, which can greatly increase your chances of heart disease. Also this belly flab can cause insulin to become less effective (insulin is the hormone responsible for storing fat in our bodies) this can make your body susceptible to diabetes.
Heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, diabetes and gallstones have all been linked to visceral fat.
Before I began my investigations on the best way to Lose Belly Fat, I had no idea as to these dangers of belly flab, so on my discovery I wanted to lose my belly flab in the quickest, healthiest way. The bottom line is, you need to eat a nutritious diet and eliminate foods that contribute to belly flab:
potatoes, white rice, white bread, potato chips, cookies, cake, and cheese. These starchy foods have many calories and eating them makes it difficult to lose tummy flab.
Eat more fiber from fresh fruits and vegetables and whole grains. Fiber makes you eliminate waste from your colon, which in turn helps your stomach appear flatter, less flabby. Foods rich in fibre also help you feel full more quickly and help you cut back on fatty foods that contribute to belly flab.

It’s been proven that those that only do calorie controlled diets alone, lose weight but do not necessarily reduce fat cell size, whilst those that exercise as well as dieting, on average reduce fat cell size by upto 20%. Usually the greater the fat cell size is, the more belly flab you have. When you follow the above advice, it’s normal that the first area to shed fat from is the belly flab and love handles area.

Do Fad Diets Help You Lose The Belly?
If you search the web for ‘weight loss diets’ you’ll find millions of web pages appear in the search engine. So you realise there’s a lot of people out there who have published web pages on which they give advice about how to lose weight.
Some of these sites contain information that is both valid and valuable for belly fat loss, but a great many others are full of nonsense and ideas that have little or no substance!
There are loads of ‘fad diet’ pages These will often focus on the latest fashionable theories about things that might work as part of a belly fat loss reduction eating regime.
Beware of such ’fad diets’ at all costs!
Most of these ‘diet plans’ are often nothing more than crash diets , implying that you starve yourself as a way of losing your belly fat.
It’s not rocket science to work out, that if you stop eating, you will lose weight. Indeed, if you stop eating altogether, you will lose so much weight that you will die, so, starving yourself will undoubtedly shed the additional poundage that you want to get rid of. Unfortunately, it will not do so in a way that is even remotely healthy.
Most ‘fad’ diets focus on eating a great deal of one particular type of food whilst removing other necessary foods from the overall diet plan altogether. This will definitely generate weight loss, but it will not do so in a healthy fashion, because a balanced diet is essential for long-term human health. Another issue of these so-called belly busting scams is they tell you not to bother taking exercise to lose weight, which is rubbish.
Nor are the ‘beneficial’ effects of such a ‘fad’ diet likely to be long lasting.
As soon as you have completed your weight loss program, you’ll return to a normal, healthy balanced diet and when you do, eating the foods that you have denied yourself for weeks or months is likely to see extra weight being piled back on just as quickly, if not faster than you managed to get rid of it.
Another problem with ‘fad’ diets is that, because of their focus on one particular type or group of foodstuffs, they tend to be boring and uninteresting. You start to crave for those foodstuffs that this particular diet denies to you, and such a craving is not going to be something that you can ignore for ever!
Many ‘fad’ diets ignore healthy eating on an even more basic level.
‘Fad’ diets will often encourage you to ignore basic healthy eating rules, such as the requirement to eat a certain number of portions of vegetables and fruits every day. As another example, such a diet plan might recommend that you avoid eating oily fish, ignoring the fact that they are one of the best known sources of the essential trans-fatty acids that are vital for long-term good health.
Because all of these here-today, gone-tomorrow so-called diet plans are accorded miracle status because of their ability to help you shed weight extremely quickly, all that they are really doing is storing up potential problems for the future.

The best way to lose love handles, is first to take the conscious decision that you are going to take action. although loosing love handles and stomach fat are two of the most stubborn areas to rid flab from, it doesn’t have to be a massive task for you. Keep in mind that deep belly fat is dangerous for your health.

But I’ll also summarise, here, what you need to do.
Ok, you’ve made the decision to give it a go, you may have tried a few times before… Done a bit of exercise, stopped eating chocolate, but you were probably trying a boring diet or were doing the wrong belly exercises. You see most people will tell you, incorrectly, that you need to do sit-ups or crunches to get rid of your love handles. But what’s the use of toning your abs when they’re covered in a layer or two of flab? You need to loose belly flab first.
To help you commit, keep a few photos to hand, you know the ones you’re embarrassed about, because they show your fat stomach, this will give you a purpose and help you concentrate on your goal.
Sort through your kitchen cupboards and throw out all the high sugar foods, soda, cookies, sweets etc. The sugar found in junk food and soda is the kind of sugar that burns quickly, unlike those sugars found in fruits and vegetables, which burn more slowly. Please don’t get conned by fad diets to lose stomach fat.
If your body is processing sugar to create energy, and you’re not using any energy, those sugars will be converted into fat for later use and you’ll be adding to your love handles.
Simply stay away from the foods you know are bad for you, this includes refined flours and the foods that they create, such as white bread, pasta, donuts, cakes and biscuits are the bad carbs and should be avoided. They can cause bloating, poor digestion, and lead to accumulation of fat.
Ideally granary or wholemeal bread should be eaten instead of white bread. Slow release carbs are also beneficial, such as oats, brown rice, some pulses and sweet potato.
When you read my Top Ten Tips eBook (fill out the form at the top right hand side of this page) you’ll find that I stress the importance of regularly drinking water throughout the day, this is because sometimes our brain confuses thirst with hunger. You will eat less if you drink a glass of water before a meal.
Once you’ve got the correct mindset for your diet, you move on to exercise to lose love handles. You should concentrate on cardio exercising. Cardio exercises raise your heart rate and boost your metabolism (for up to 24 hours! – after a good workout), but the most important benefit of cardio exercises is that they burn fat, stomach fat included.
Do something you enjoy… If you like to go outdoors, consider fast-paced walks, running, cycling etc. For those who like the gym treadmills, elliptical trainers and stationary bikes could be the choice. If you prefer to stay at home you can jump rope, dance or start kick boxing.

Belly Fat, Men You Don’t Have To Let It All Hang Out…
Stomach fat, belly flab, beer gut, it doesn’t matter what name you give it, it creeps up on you. I realised that my gut had sneaked up on me last June.

So what prompted this mindset to lose my belly flab? Well…
We were getting ready to have a cracking day out at my mate’s wedding. Now my Mrs, had been preparing what to wear for the last couple of months, in fact all of her friends had known what each other was wearing for weeks. But it wasn’t an issue for me, all I had to do was pop on my suit and within half an hour, get down to the pub.
Or so I thought, I got my shirt and tie on, then panic stations set in when I pulled my trousers up. There was a 2" gap between the button and button hole. Had they shrunk??
No, you already know the answer, my belly flab couldn’t be sucked in enough to do up the trousers. With a quick addition of a belt, I managed to keep the trousers up, but it meant I had to keep the suit jacket fastened all day, to cover up my embarrassment of my trousers not fitting.
I was determined to loose my belly, but I didn’t want to get stuck into some girly diet, that would end up getting my stomach fat back when I stopped it. I was also adamant that I didn’t want to lose the beer.
I don’t know about you, but I consider beer more than just a drink. It’s an excuse to meet up with your mates and have a great night out, you know what I mean, putting the world to rights and acting like teenagers again. It’s something to look forward to at the end of a hard week.
